{"id":67,"date":"2018-11-03T18:57:11","date_gmt":"2018-11-03T18:57:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mikesylvia.org\/?p=67"},"modified":"2018-11-04T11:17:20","modified_gmt":"2018-11-04T11:17:20","slug":"gunstock-bailout","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mikesylvia.org\/?p=67","title":{"rendered":"Gunstock Bailout"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rep Raymond Howard has facts on his side<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>2018 has presented Gunstock with some tough sledding on the fiscal front.&nbsp; As we approach the November 6th election Gunstock and its financial woes has been used as political fodders.&nbsp; In recent letters <a href=\"https:\/\/www.laconiadailysun.com\/opinion\/letters_to_editor\/rep-howard-was-wrong-about-claims-of-tax-spikes-due\/article_94233db4-d88e-11e8-a4ba-176839d43ef1.html\">1<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.laconiadailysun.com\/opinion\/letters_to_editor\/howard-s-stated-views-of-gunstock-show-true-ignorance\/article_c6eaf496-dec2-11e8-9cd5-c76fa0bb966b.html\">2<\/a>, to the Laconia Daily Sun a candidate (a current Gunstock commissioner) and a former Gunstock commissioner have written a jumble of incoherent misleading scribblings aimed at the integrity of Rep. Howard. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After a number of years being run by the Belknap County Commissioners, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunstock.com\/upload\/photos\/240739GunstockEnablingStatute2010.pdf\">Gunstock Area Commission<\/a> was formed to resolve problems associated with the ski area being run by the County Commissioners. This ignores the actual problem which is a government body trying to run a competitive business.&nbsp; <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the problems of a government run business is <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Moral_hazard\">moral hazard<\/a>.&nbsp; The taxpayers are on the hook for any failures but management reaps rewards if things run reasonably well.&nbsp; In the ski industry 2-3 years of bad weather can be expected and plans for such need to be in place.&nbsp; The late 1990&#8217;s put Gunstock in a position which required a hard choice; shut it down, or go to the taxpayers to keep it running.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On May 11, 2000 the County Delegation handed the bill to the county taxpayers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"832\" src=\"http:\/\/mikesylvia.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/GunstockBailout.png\" alt=\"Gunstock 2000 Memorandum\" class=\"wp-image-64\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mikesylvia.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/GunstockBailout.png 700w, https:\/\/mikesylvia.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/GunstockBailout-252x300.png 252w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><figcaption>May 11, 2000 Gunstock Memorandum of Agreement<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Contrary to Rep.
